Protecting Salmon Strongholds around the Pacific Rim

In this talk, Dr. Matthew Sloat, Science Director at Wild Salmon Center, draws on far flung experiences in Kamchatka and the Russian Far East as well as work in our home watersheds on the Oregon Coast to explore the ideals and realities of safeguarding a future for Pacific salmon. Come enjoy a tale of some of our watershed's most iconic native fish, while enjoying some of Valkyrie's outstanding wines and special menu selections!

This pub talk is co-sponsored by Willamette Habitat Restoration, a private fund which is dedicated to supporting habitat restoration and education projects throughout the Willamette Valley.
Speaker Bio:
​
Dr. Matthew Sloat is a fish ecologist with over 20 years of research experience around the Pacific Rim from southern California to the Russian Far East. He holds a Ph.D. in Fisheries Science from Oregon State University and specializes in the ecology of Pacific salmon watersheds. Dr. Sloat is committed to conservation across international boundaries and sits on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Salmonid Specialist Group and is a US delegate to the bilateral US and Russia working group on the Protection of the Environment and Natural Resources. In 2018, Dr. Sloat was named a National Geographic Explorer in support of his work to protect salmon watersheds in the Russian Far East.
